Italy strengthens protection of PDOs and PGIs 

With the entry into force on 23 August 2023 of Law no. 102 of 24 July 2023, the Industrial Property Code introduces the prohibition on the registration as trademarks of signs that are evocative of, usurp or imitate geographical indications and protected denominations of origin.
The right to oppose the registration of trademark applications is also granted to the subjects entitled to protect the rights conferred by a denomination of origin or geographical indication and, in the absence of a recognised protection consortium, to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests.
