Protection of PDOs and PGIs in the EU has been strengthened.

Today, the new Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 of the European Parliament and of the Council on protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications for wines and agricultural products, geographical indications for spirit drinks, traditional specialities guaranteed and optional quality indications for agricultural products, such as mountain products, has been published.
 

New features include: greater powers for protection consortia; a new labelling system with the obligation to indicate the name of the producer; regulation of the use of PDO and PGI ingredients in processed products; strengthening of the protection of GIs against the so-called "evocation" phenomenon and in relation to domain names.
